Emcee, fitness fanatic and now an empowering entrepreneur, Liv Lo (aka Henry Golding’s better half) tells us how her life has changed in just one year.
After doing yoga for over a decade, Liv Lo decided she wanted more. During her quest to find a functional workout plan, she launched fitness website FitSphere in 2017, which offers yoga-inspired workout videos. Yoga programme FitSphere First is a 12-part online subscription of yoga and HIIT videos.
In a recent event organised by Swisse, Liv led a group through a heart-pumping HIIT workout. Afterwards, she sat down to answer some of our questions.
Liv Lo On FitSphere
Congrats on FitSphere. How would you describe it to first-time readers?
Thank you! FitSphere is basically fit yoga. I’ve been practising yoga for 12 years, and teaching for three. My foundation is in yoga and I really love that it teaches you the right alignment. Basic yoga postures are the foundation for a lot of exercises. For example, a squat is like a chair or lunge. Once you have that foundation and you have that body awareness, you can go into dynamic movements.
What motivated you to start FitSphere?
After many years of doing yoga, I found that it was not enough for me. When I was teaching, I started to put in some HIIT moves inside the yoga class. Then, I taught it at a workshop and it got so popular that I had to teach in a bigger space. I was teaching 16 workshops a year, and four workshops on some weekends. It was more than I could physically give. I started Fitsphere to take everything online.
You’re very into HIIT and yoga. Do you plan to incorporate anything else into your fitness routine and FitSphere?
Yeah, weights. Also, running or any kind of cardio. I’m very into functional fitness – anything that is going to get your heart rate up, and then balanced with a good stretch. A lot of my programmes combine those.

Who should try FitSphere?
I find that even with so much travelling going on, FitSphere is very much my personal practice and what I like to do. I find that that’s what people connect with me on. They also travel a lot, with pockets of time here and there. It’s been very fun to be able to reach out to the audience and be able to help them benefit from a fitness lifestyle that can be incorporated into their daily lives.
On Her Personal Life
How do you stay motivated after so long and with such a busy schedule? I heard you just landed in Singapore yesterday!
Yeah, exactly. Other students inspire me. Teaching inspires me. Making videos and creating programmes pushes me to keep developing, and that’s where I get my best feedback from. I love working with people and working out with people.
To stay inspired, I go to new classes. I just tried spinning, and when I was in New York, I tried a running-based workout. I like to keep mixing things up. I enjoy HIIT and yoga, as well as bodyweight workouts because they are never the same. It’s not the standard this, this, this and this. They can always be different, and that’s why they always kick my ass.
What does your week of workouts look like?
I just try to do whatever I can. It really depends. I’m not really strict, so I don’t put pressure on myself to work out every day. It depends on where I’m at. I’ll try to get in some activity after my flight, and especially those times when I’m feeling extra lethargic.
Do you follow a certain diet?
I take vitamins because they give me a boost of energy and endorphins. It’s important, especially when you travel a lot and your body gets low on energy. Drinking sufficient water and having proper meals are so important in maintaining a balanced diet. I don’t follow fad diets.
Your haircut coincided with your birthday and the launch of Fitsphere. Was it a style choice or was it to make working out easier?
The latter, for sure. I don’t need a hair tie, which is the most amazing thing in the world. Boys, I know how you feel. It’s so awesome and I found it very empowering to be able to change my perspective on how women should be or look like.
I posted about it, that I thought short hair was for boys, because I cut my hair in school before, and used to get made fun of by my brothers and sisters. I thought that it was something that I shouldn’t have. Then, I cut it recently and nothing bad happened. It felt great.

What are your fitness goals for the next year?
I’m creating a new online programme, called FitSphere Force. I’ve been teaching that class in person for the past year and it’s been a real hit. It involves using a sphere and weighted balls.

I’m sure our readers will be very curious to know – do you work out with your husband?
Yeah I do! He comes for my classes sometimes, or we go to the gym. We may not do the same workout, but we’ll exercise in the same room. He knows what he likes to do. Sometimes, we do partner workouts at the end or help each other stretch. That’s really nice. Occasionally, we go for a run together, but he’s always faster than me. (Laughs). So we don’t hold hands but he’ll come meet me at the finish line.
How has your life changed after your husband’s acting debut in Crazy Rich Asians?
We’ve been preparing for this for a year and a half already, so he’s filmed it a long time ago. Fitsphere came from that need to travel and be on the road. I knew that I was going to be with him wherever he is. Taking everything online and going digital has really helped with that. I get to reach a bigger audience, and at the same time be able to keep up with Henry.
When we spoke to you last year, you talked about family goals. Has anything changed?
You know we’re newly married, and everything is still changing. We’re going to be in Taiwan next week with my family, and then London with his family. That’s our family plan – just spending family time together.

Expanding my programme, doing a bit more travelling, being with my family, and doing more hosting. I’m really lucky I get to interview movie stars. I’m still working with Reebok so I’ll be leading another fitness retreat and doing a couple more fitness things with them. The year is going to go by just like that.
