    There are mat classes and there are reformer classes. Both usually last between 45 minutes to an hour. The former comprises exercises you do on a mat while the latter works with machines such as the reformer, which is a sliding platform with foot bars, springs and pulleys which provide resistance. Both classes center around the main aim of pilates – working your muscles against gravity, to better strengthen and control them, instead of mindlessly exhausting yourself out.

    Forget loose tanks or airy shorts when it comes to pilates. You need fitted activewear for every class to prevent any wardrobe malfunctions with the range of body movements that you will do. You don’t want your clothes to get caught in the equipment for reformer classes.

    Your first class might be quite confusing, especially if you’re in a class that has been ongoing. You might hear quite a bit of jargon like “peel through your spine”, “poking chin”, “table-top legs” and so forth, so do not be afraid to ask for assistance, either from the instructor or your neighbour. It is always best to put yourself in the middle of the room so that you have the best view of what is going on. It is the spot that’s the most noticeable to the instructor and also allows you to observe what others are doing right.

    Pilates might not be your most intensive workout, but it does work out your core quite a bit. Your muscles will feel the burn not only during the workout but also the day after. But your body will, in time, learn to get used to the movements as you do more classes.

    No matter how much you love it, you shouldn’t go for classes everyday. Your body would need recovery days from the resistance training you get from pilates. Instead you will find that pilates improve your performance in other sports or exercises by stretching, strengthening and aligning your body the right way, like allowing you to lift heavier weights, run faster and swim better.
