No amount of strength training can help you escape a physical attack – one of the many things we learnt during a Brazilian jiu-jitsu class at Maverick Martial Arts. In fact, it’s possible for smaller and weaker individuals to defeat far bigger and stronger opponents with jiu-jitsu techniques. Compared to other martial art forms, jiu-jitsu is said to be more realistic, as it teaches you self-defence moves to use in close-proximity situations.
With clear instructions, demonstrations and close guidance, our instructor, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Claudia do Val and Pedro Wolff, the owner of Maverick Martial Arts, led us through some of the most common techniques useful for women in various scenarios.
