With Mid-Autumn Festival just around the corner, weight watchers will find it particularly hard to resist the sweet treats of mooncake. Falling off a healthy-eating routine is common during the festive period (think: Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa or Christmas) when gastronomic temptations abound. What’s more, refusing someone’s offer could seem anti-social, so saying “no” becomes extra difficult. It’s also easy to lose track of the calories you down nibbling on bite-sized treats while chatting with friends. You know the usual suspects – pineapple tarts, cornflake cookies and candy canes.
“Saving your stomach” for the dinner spread is another mistake that weight watchers make. Experts say that the hunger from not eating all day may cause you to binge later.
How to keep your diet on track during the festive period
Compliment the host – and the dish – by saying something like: “It looks delicious but I’ve really had enough to eat”. And don’t beat yourself up if you slip up along the way. Instead, recommit to the diet immediately and give yourself credit when it’s due.
Allow yourself to indulge – the smart way. Besides including high-fibre foods like fruits and vegetables in each meal, try burning more calories by engaging in physical activities like this fat-burning body combat workout. Dr Ivy Lim, registrar at Changi Sports Medicine Centre, suggests roping in friends and family to stay motivated. “This way, you can work out and catch up with loved ones at the same time,” she says.
