The busy holiday season doesn’t always allow us to get to the gym as often as we’d like. However, there are a few ways you can still get a quick workout in while doing your (seemingly never-ending) Christmas shopping. The best part about it all is that you’ll be having so much fun browsing the stores you won’t even realize you’re burning calories!
Once you’ve parked your car, it’s time to get moving! Walk at a brisk pace to the entrance and then power-walk to all of the stores. Walking at 6.5km/hr for an hour will burn around 400 calories: that’s nearly three servings of chocolate log cake! If you’re shopping with a friend, you could also add some fun to the day by challenging them to a power-walk race!
Earn bonus points: Leave the car at home and take your bike. For even more of a challenge; walk all the way to the mall! Carrying your shopping bags home will definitely give you a great workout.
DRINK TO INCREASE METABOLISM
Stay hydrated while you whirl around the store by regularly sipping from your water bottle. To increase your metabolism further, why not prepare some green tea in a thermos before shopping? Green tea is known for its metabolism-boosting properties and antioxidants. A study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that green tea-extract increases the metabolism by four per cent over a 24 hour period.
QUEUE AND BURN
There’s not much cardio you can do while queuing, unless you don’t mind getting a few strange looks while you do jumping-jacks. However, there are some toning exercises you can do without anyone being any the wiser. For example, you can breathe out deeply, and pull your stomach in towards your spine, then hold. Release as you breathe in, then repeat.
PRACTISE YOUR POSTURE
Bending over computers, slouching on chairs and the classic phone hunch position can all contribute to bad posture, which can cause long-term back pain. By focusing on your posture as you walk, you’ll not only help correct your body position, but will work muscles that haven’t been called on in a while. You’ll also notice the difference that a good posture can do to your self-confidence and sense of wellbeing. Pull your shoulders back and down, raise your head and tuck in your lower back. It’s not as easy as it sounds – but that’s a multitasking workout for you!
A FINAL TREAT
Reward yourself at the end of the day by trying on a special Christmas outfit. Just 15-30 minutes of searching the store and trying on clothes can burn up to 100 calories, and you’ll get a great outfit from it! Try out some of these exercises to get a great workout in while shopping your way through your Christmas list.
