The BarreAmped class at Barre 2 Barre strengthens and lengthens your muscles, thanks to its winning combination of dance, yoga and pilates techniques. BarreAmped isn’t your usual barre class. Created by international fitness celebrity and former Lotte Berk Method instructor Suzanne Bowen, takes classic barre moves and elevates them with power, precision and focused intensity. The method stands out from the crowd as its focus is on working with a neutral spine.
In fact, Barre 2 Barre is Asia’s only fitness studio certified in the BarreAmped method. Co-founded by Karen Lim and Mylène Mackay, they launched the studio in Hong Kong in 2012 and recently opened their second studio in Singapore with partner, Jessica Felicia. Both studios run weekly group classes in BarreAmped, yoga and pilates mat as well as teacher training and apprenticeship programmes.
Here’s what you can expect at a BarreAmped class. Each 55-minute session focusses on executing tiny isometric movements with precision and concentration. The class also incorporates variations of ballet plies, so expect to get some serious core and thigh work in, which is great if you work in a sedentary job.
Newbies will start with the fundamentals while those familiar with the moves will be given more challenging modifications. This means that your body will be constantly guessing as it won’t be able to predict the sequence. Without that muscle memory, you can be assured that you’ll always be getting a fab workout.
This full-body workout is good for all fitness levels and no dance background is required. The instructors will modify the moves depending on the abilities of the students. They are also highly trained to correct and refine your posture.
Speaking of instructors, try a class by Jessica. A brief summary of Jessica’s background: She was born and raised in Los Angeles where she was first introduced to barre fitness. She began her practice in 2009 and was certified to teach BarreAmped in early 2015 as part of the Hong Kong Barre 2 Barre team. After completing her MBA at INSEAD in early 2016, she partnered with Karen and Mylène on the expansion of Barre 2 Barre into Singapore. Jessica’s classes are challenging and loads of fun!
