Sweet, creamy and good for you? That’s dates in a nutshell. Here’s why you’ll love them.
Dates are often referred to as nature’s candy and they certainly live up to the hype with a butterscotch, honey or caramel-like flavour profile.
Although we’re generally cautious about sweet foods that may spike our blood sugar levels and cause our energy to dive afterwards, dates are surprisingly on the low to *mid-end of the glycaemic index – comparable to oranges and canned peaches, and almost half the glycaemic figure for watermelons.
Still, moderation is key, so stick to the recommended serving size of no more than three dates. That doesn’t seem like a big amount, but you’ll find that dates satisfy after just one or two, which is why they make great snacks especially on busy days when you have to go, go, go. As a bonus, dates also come with a multitude of health benefits. Here, we list four you should know about.
Dates are loaded with disease-fighting polyphenols
Here’s some sweet news. A study by the University of Scranton in the United States found that of all the dried fruits, dates actually contain the highest concentration of polyphenols. Polyphenols are micronutrients found in plants and several studies have shared that they can help prevent cancer, heart disease and diabetes, some of the major causes of death today.
Dates help to protect brain function
Antioxidants and other plant compounds in dates have been found to protect brain cells against oxidative stress and inflammation caused by external and internal factors, potentially warding off neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (better known as ALS). In another joint study by Oman and Australian experts done on mice, having a diet rich in dates seemed to maintain and improve learning, memory and motor coordination.
Dates are rich in essential minerals
Vitamins are important, but so are minerals, and dates have at least 15 of them. Some of the most noteworthy include calcium which you need for strong bones, copper for making red blood cells and improving immunity, potassium to regulate blood pressure as well as magnesium for healthy nerve and muscle function. Magnesium is often found in fibre-rich foods and, you guessed it, dates are one of them with as much as 11.5 per cent of fibre per fruit.
Dates keep up your energy levels
Too tired to hit the gym or meet friends after work? Dates are often a key ingredient in energy balls for good reason. Besides holding all the other ingredients together, dates themselves are a rich source of carbohydrates and sugar which your body quickly turns into energy. The minerals in dates like zinc, selenium and iron can also perk you up if you’re feeling lethargic.
