Which waterproof eyeliner really works?
When it comes to finding your Holy Grail (HG) eyeliner, there are a few criteria to consider: First, you definitely want something that’s easy-to-draw and allows you to get that perfect cat eye flick every time. And second, given Singapore’s humidity, another big factor is whether or not the eyeliner is smudge-proof and waterproof.
In our bid to find the best waterproof eyeliner there is, we scoured the web for beauty reviews and asked industry experts to recommend their best-rated waterproof eyeliners. Here are the ones that made the cut:
- Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner ($36)
- Kat Von D Tattoo Liner ($32)
- Urban Decay Perversion Waterproof Fine Point Eye Pen ($35)
- Hourglass Voyeur Waterproof Liquid Liner ($56)
- Too Faced Sketch Marker Liquid Art Eyeliner ($32)
But instead of just taking other people’s word for it, three of us in the team – Zarelda, Estelle and myself – decided to put these eyeliners to the test to find out just how waterproof they are, and whether or not they really live up to the hype. And just because we know how many of you girls out there still can’t hit the gym without your trusty eyeliner on, we did just that.
We tested each eyeliner by drawing them on and attending five super sweaty HIIT workouts. For each workout, we drew on a different eyeliner and did intense, fast-paced exercises for at least 30 minutes to make sure we were dripping sweat.
As a backgrounder, Zarelda has really oily lids and so far hasn’t been able to find a waterproof eyeliner that works for her. Estelle, on the other hand, is the opposite. With dry skin and dry lids, she hasn’t had a problem finding a smudge-proof eyeliner. I’m somewhere in between with combination skin. My lids aren’t crazy oily and most eyeliners stay put on me (mascara though, is a whole different story).
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner ($36)
The unanimous favourite! This seriously stays all day and was the only eyeliner that didn’t smudge on Zarelda. The applicator was also easy to use and allows for smooth drawing of crisp, black lines.
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner ($32)
This is one of my personal favourites. It’s my current go-to eyeliner because the applicator is really fine and soft. This didn’t budge on Estelle and I, but smudged slightly on Zarelda. It’s good for those who do not want such a harsh line though, as it isn’t as pigmented as some of the other eyeliners.
Urban Decay Perversion Waterproof Fine Point Eye Pen ($35)
This offered strong colour payoff, but was unfortunately the smudgiest of the lot. It took a long time to set and smudged on both Zarelda and I. It was also rather difficult to remove (kept migrating around our lids). This didn’t budge on Estelle though, so it should work for girls with drier lids.
Hourglass Voyeur Waterproof Liquid Liner ($56)
This stayed put on Estelle and I, but feathered on Zarelda. The applicator was pretty uncomfortable as well – it was hard and pokey, so you might want to steer clear of this if you have really sensitive eyes. Pigment-wise, this is a winner though. The lines drawn were smooth, sharp and intensely black.
Too Faced Sketch Marker Liquid Art Eyeliner ($32)
The design of this eyeliner was inspired by Japanese calligraphy pens so they’re pretty easy to control even for beginners. That said, this almost completely rubbed off on Zarelda by the end of the workout.
So, there you have it! Five workouts and five eyeliners later, the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner has proven to be the best waterproof and smudge-proof eyeliner on the market.
