Year end parties are the best times to pull out your glittery makeup. They instantly jazz up any outfit, plus are great at highlighting your features. But going overboard with glitter is also a sure way to attract the wrong kind of attention. Keep things classy by following these tips so you don’t end up shining like a disco ball.
1. Stay focused
Keep you glitter and sparkle to just one area and focus on one feature at a time. “Use glitter as a highlight,” advises freelance makeup artist Larry Yeo. “If you’re applying sparkly makeup on the eyes, keep your skin matte and tone down the lip sheen,” he adds. If you bling everything, it just ends up looking distracting and messy.
2. Pair it right
What’s the point of wearing glitter if it doesn’t shine? When worn on the eyes, make sure your glitter stands out by pairing it with a dark eyeshadow. An easy way to do this is to layer loose glitter over a cream eyeshadow base in a darker colour.
3. Use it as an accent
Not ready to go all out with glitter? Start by using it as an accent along your lash line by opting for a glitter eyeliner. Another plus: “Glitter along the lash line will make eyes pop and look brighter,” says Tan Ik Kee, makeup artist at Make Up Store.
4. Glitter size matters
A bit of shimmer can help define your cheekbones and give your face a glow, but you don’t want light to reflect off huge specks of glitter on your face. When buying glittery makeup, take note of how big the glitter particles are and pick one that suits your needs. Smaller particles help illuminate while bigger particles add drama.
Glitter is notoriously difficult to remove. Larry suggests soaking a cotton pad with makeup remover before placing it over skin for five seconds. Swipe the makeup off in one direction. You can also pick up stubborn glitter residue with a piece of sticky tape – just make it less sticky by running it over fabric first, and avoid your lashes and brows!
