Drank a little too much at the festive parties? Get rid of your hangover with these tips. By Dawn Chen
Had one glass too many at your weekend party? According to the Health Promotion Board, women take longer to break down alcohol, so it’s no surprise if you wake up the day after feeling hung-over. Still, your day doesn’t have to be ruined. Here are some ways that you can feel better the morning after.
1. Load up on water.
Drink plenty of water as your body is likely dehydrated from the alcohol. Coconut water or a sports drink will help rehydrate your body quickly too.
2. Don’t skip breakfast.
Your body is probably lacking in vitamins and minerals as it works hard to process the alcohol. Even if food is the last thing on your mind, eating something nutritious like eggs and wholemeal bread then washing it down with fruit juice will help give you more energy and replenish your blood sugar levels.
3. Avoid more alcohol.
There is a Chinese saying that goes “fight poison with poison”, but that is far from the truth when it comes to alcohol. Drinking more alcohol is just going to make you feel worse and prolong your hangover. Give your body a chance to recover by staying away from the bottle the day after.
4. Ease that headache.
Got a pounding in your head? Pop an over-the-counter painkiller to ease the pain. Stick to paracetamol-based remedies as these tend to be gentler on the stomach, according to the National Health Service in the UK.
5. Soothe your stomach.
An easy way to calm your waves of nausea – and rehydrate – is to sip teas that aid digestion. Try having a cup of peppermint, chamomile or ginger tea.
