Want to curl, straighten, or just combat frizzy hair? I tried the new natural low-damage hair treatment at Mi The Salon. Here’s how it went.
Don’t you hate it when your hair is all over the place, even after styling or combing it out? Singapore’s humidity often causes unruly and frizzy hair and all that effort in the morning goes down the drain as soon as you’re out and about. I have permed, bleached and dyed my hair in every colour under the sun, so you can imagine how damaged the ends of my hair are. Straightening it would be easier, but I prefer natural waves. Every hairstylist I’ve gone to advised me not to perm it in its current condition, so I left it looking as it is, until I heard about this new treatment.
To target frizz and processed hair, Mi The Salon upgraded the common rebonding and perming processes with their in-house formulations. Created by Gary Chew and John Tham, Salon Vim’s Co-Founder and Director respectively, the Mi Magic Straight and Wonder Curls hair treatments are meant to give you an effortless-looking hairdo so you’ll look photo-ready for any occasion.
The Wonder Curls hair treatment experience
At first, this process sounded more like a nourishing perm or rebonding rather than a treatment. I later learnt that it includes a treatment but it is still a chemical process that gives you straight or curly hair. I was initially indecisive between the straight and curly treatments, and eventually went with the latter as I prefer a super natural look that borderlines looking messy.
During the consultation, the director, John, immediately pointed out the difficulty my bleached hair would cause. There were fewer natural proteins left in my hair as I had bleached it about half a dozen times. It was going to be a challenge to restructure my hair and I was curious to see what they could do to salvage it.
The treatment started with a wash to determine how much they could perm my hair. Then, they went straight into applying the perming lotion to my hair before rolling small sections of my hair up halfway for a natural bounce and texture. The rollers were then clipped and connected to a high-tech heating machine. The high temperatures made me stop to think if this was a hair treatment or a perm with a hair treatment.
The process followed a normal perm, just using products that comprised natural ingredients such as cottonseed, almond and rice oil, instead of harsh chemicals.
After a quick 15 minutes, my hair was ready to be treated, washed, conditioned and styled. While they were unravelling my curls during the wash, the deeply nourishing hair treatment product was applied to my hair. The whole process took a little over two hours.
My hair was surprisingly soft and silky when I touched it. The ends weren’t as dry as before and even had a soft shine, thanks to the cottonseed, almond and rice oil that penetrated deep into my hair shafts. Almost a week in, my hair is still feeling as soft and smooth as it was post-treatment and I’m convinced by the effectiveness of this treatment, which doubles as a low-damage perm for the ends.
K-pop and K-drama fans can achieve photo-ready curls with this moisture-restoring treatment that creates glossy and defined curls. For those who prefer sleek and straight hair, the salon also offers a straightening treatment.
