Besides her acting acclaim, Cate Blanchett is also known for her beautiful, glowing skin. This SK-II ambassador shares how she keeps looking flawless. By Dawn Chen
Cate Blanchett has a host of awards to her name – multiple Academy Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globes Awards and British Academy Awards among others. Who could forget her as the ethereal Lady Galadriel in Lord of the Rings, or her riveting portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth: The Golden Age? But beyond her acting acclaim, Cate Blanchett is also known for her porcelain, glowing skin. This SK-II global brand ambassador was in Singapore recently, and shared with us her beauty tips on looking so flawless, plus her insights on the brand’s latest Change Destiny campaign.
On why Cate started using SK-II:
“During my first pregnancy, my body went through a cacophony of changes. I noticed that I was getting melasma (hormonally-induced skin discolouration). I had never worried about my skin before, and suddenly did for the first time. I realised I needed extra help, so I turned to friends who were makeup artists, and they recommended SK-II. Being very pragmatic, I decided to give it a month. I used the SK-II whitening range and the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, and I really noticed a difference – I expected the melasma to fade, but beyond that I saw an improvement in the texture and luminosity of my skin as well. And then there is the old test, to see if my husband noticed a difference and he did! He said my skin felt softer.”
Cate’s current skincare regime:
My go-to range is from the SK-II Luxury Pitera LXP line. I always use the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, SK-II LXP Ultimate Perfecting Serum and SK-II LXP Ultimate Perfecting Cream. I’ll also use sunscreen. Depending on the climate and my skin’s needs, I do incorporate other products as well, but my routine always begins and ends with the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence.
On flights, I always use the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask to stay hydrated. I used to wait for the lights to go off before putting it on, but now I don’t care. And on the red carpet, I used to decant the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence into a little spray bottle to refresh my skin, but now I’ve got the SK-II Mid-Day Miracle Essence.
What the SK-II Change Destiny campaign means to Cate:
“There is a critical mass of women who are now saying “enough is enough” – there’s enough pressure being put on women in all walks of life. There’s a lot of sexual stereotyping on women from a very young age. You’re either a beautiful girl, or you’re not a beautiful girl, and it’s implied that there’s nothing you can do about that. You’re either intelligent, or you’re not intelligent, or you’ll either have a great career or you won’t. Appearance-wise, you’ve either got great skin or you don’t have great skin. And now, women are started to ask what they can do about these stereotypes. What I love about the notion behind what SK-II is doing is great – it’s reminding women that there’s something they can do about and they don’t have to accept those labels.”
How Cate has changed her own destiny:
“Personally, I didn’t have particularly great skin growing up. No one commented on it when I was in my teens or my twenties, but I started getting more comments on my skin in my late thirties and early forties. And the only thing that I’ve done differently – apart from staying out of the sun – is start using SK-II. In this way, using SK-II had a real and tangible effect on the destiny of my skin. If you extrapolate this experience out further, it also reflected my experience when I first left school. I studied fine arts and economics, but here I am now being an actress.”
