Find out her secret to being so gorgeous and well-liked. By Estelle Low
One of Singapore’s favourite bloggers, 26-year-old Melissa Celestine Koh has over 171,000 followers on Instagram alone (@melissackoh). The lass who blogs at www.melissackoh looks just as good in her photos as in real life: Good skin, almond-shaped eyes, charming dimples, slim figure, hair that falls right into place…
Melissa even knows her best angles, but doesn’t take the credit for all her amazing photos. In fact, she often collaborates with professional photographers and duly tags them in her posts. See her photo editing tips here.
With the size of her following putting her on par with several local A-List actresses, we had to find out Melissa’s secret to being so gorgeous and well liked. Here are the surprising answers.
1. She doesn’t have a fixed workout routine.
For someone so svelte (no signs of flab in sight!), Melissa ought to be quite the gym rat. Instead, she tells us: “I haven’t worked out hard for about three years now.” She, of course, is referring to the kind of rigorous training she went through as a competitive rhythmic gymnast in junior college, and later as a competitive varsity cheerleader.
“I was very active during my school days. At my fittest, I could run 2.4km with ankle weights in under 13 minutes, and do split jumps without feeling breathless. I’m still quite flexible, but definitely can’t do that now.”
Good genes may be on her side, but Melissa isn’t taking her health and fitness for granted. The frequent traveller tells us she makes it a point to be active while overseas: “When I’m travelling, walking is my go-to form of transport. I do it as much as I can, and take the stairs instead of the lift or escalator. In my hotel room, I do leg lifts to work my abs.” In other words: Just. Keep. Moving.
2. She eats like anyone else, but cuts out stuff.
Melissa’s favourite treats may include eggs Benedict, fried black carrot cake, pasta and froyo, but she’s still careful about what makes it pass her lips.
“When I’m having eggs Ben, I avoid the hollandaise sauce. When ordering black carrot cake, I ask for it to be fried with less oil – and I actually prefer it that way. When I’m having carbs, I go for wholegrain or multigrain options,” she says.
What’s more, Melissa hardly snacks. “I don’t have a thing for chips, biscuits or chocolates. If I really need to eat in between meals, I usually have something healthier like yogurt or soya bean pudding with less sugar.”
3. She stays grounded.
The life of bloggers may seem glamorous, especially if they have a multitude of sponsorships thrown their way. However, Melissa shrugs off these perks: “In this industry, it’s important to have the right mindset. It’s not about the freebies. I’m doing this because I’m passionate about my work, from the brainstorming, fashion styling and writing, to taking and editing pictures.” Her best advice for newbies: “Be true to yourself always. Don’t put on a facade.”
When asked about her impressive social media following (171k is pretty impressive among Singapore bloggers), Melissa credits this to her relatability. “I’m not the prettiest or most gorgeous person out there, but my dreamy yet down-to-earth style resonates with people. I believe that when you love what you’re doing and do it well, others will naturally be attracted to you.”
Of course, we think her winsome looks count for something, too!
