In Singapore, it’s not uncommon to walk through a shopping mall and chance upon a store selling Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) remedies. If you’ve always wanted to give TCM a try but didn’t know what to expect, this one’s for you.
According to experts from Eu Yan Sang, TCM seeks to achieve the balance of “Yin” and “Yang” within the body. When you go to any Eu Yan Sang TCM Clinic, a registered TCM physician will first consult with you and do an assessment on your condition through four diagnostic methods.
This involves looking at your gait, posture, facial colour, expression, and the shape, coating and colour of your tongue.
The TCM physician then listens to your voice and tone, and checks your coughing and breathing sounds, as well as listen to your lungs.
Here, the TCM physician will ask you more questions about your health and lifestyle to confirm his diagnosis.
Finally, the TCM physician will physically assess the areas of discomfort by checking for swelling and water retention. He or she will also take your pulse.
After the consultation, a suitable treatment plan will be customised for you. In TCM, practitioners believe that the body has self-healing properties, and the treatments are designed to guide the body towards a holistic reboot of its system. In general, there are eight ways in which detox is carried out in TCM. They are perspiration (汗法), purgation (下法), harmonisation (和法), warming (温法), heat-clearing (清法), regurgitation (吐法), elimination (消法) and nourishment (补法). Your TCM physician will be able to prescribe the right solution for you based on the diagnosis.
At the Eu Yan Sang TCM Clinic, some of the Detox Programme remedies include herbal medication, TCM treatments like acupuncture and cupping, detox recipes for home use, and exercise and lifestyle tips. These are all effective methods for regulating “qi” and blood circulation, clearing excessive heat, removing dampness and phlegm and relieving constipation and indigestion.
