Epic bad day at work. Or maybe a series of unresolved arguments finally exploded to become a major fall out. Whatever the reason, something inside you snaps and your emotions turn extreme – rage, violence or even, hopelessness.
No matter how big or small a problem seems to be, and no matter what the trigger, know this: mental disorder is no respecter of age. The term ‘mental disorder’ brings many negative connotations, but conditions range from the more commonly known psychiatric illnesses like stress, anxiety and depression, to lesser understood ones like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Take our quick quiz to check your mental wellness:
The next time you feel anxious or agitated, take a time out alone. Even 20 minutes of relaxation or doing something pleasurable for yourself can be restorative and decrease your overall anxiety level.
Or keep a journal and rank your anxiety on a 1-to-10 scale. Note the events during which you felt anxious and the thoughts going through your mind before and during the anxiety. Keep track of things that make you more anxious or less anxious.
Also, avoid unhealthy substance use. Alcohol and drug use and even caffeine or nicotine use can cause or worsen anxiety.
Note: This quiz isn’t intended to replace medical advice. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment and unresolved mental disorders can worsen. Seek professional help early as prompt recognition and intervention can mitigate symptoms of mental conditions.
