Hiccups are an involuntary reaction from our bodies that occur to us every once in a while. It is caused by a spasm of our diaphragm muscle, which is located below our lungs. A few common causes of hiccups are eating or drinking too quickly, or having had too much to eat and drink. Luckily, these minor hiccups can be solved within a few minutes right at home! Read on to find a few simple ways to banish the dreaded hiccup.
Drink a glass of water quickly
Down a tall glass of water quickly. The uninterrupted swallowing of fluids might relax your diaphragm and you’ll find yourself free of hiccups when you’re done with the last drop. As you quickly gulp down the water, it adds a different kind of motion to the constant contractions of your diaphragm and is the easiest solution to deal with your hiccups!
Swallow a spoonful of sugar
The remedy of swallowing a spoonful of sugar, either dry or washing it down with some water might help. The grainy nature of the sugar triggers the vagus nerve, which is responsible for conveying information about the body to the brain. The swallowing of the sugar is usually a successful and fast way to stop your hiccups immediately.
Try controlling the air pressure in your body by taking a deep breath and holding it for about 10 seconds. However, when the 10 seconds are up, instead of exhaling, inhale a bit more and hold that breath for a while. Finally, inhale a little bit more air before finally exhaling all your previous 3 little breaths out. Increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in your airway passages for a short time tends to relax the diaphragm muscles from its involuntary contractions.
