Millennials may have been given a bad rap for spending too much on avocado toast, but fast-forward a couple of years and the love for the buttery, nutritious avocado does not seem to be waning. It’s not just toast that goes well with this superfood; avocado dishes range from smoothies and shakes to cakes, maki rolls and of course, good ol’ guacamole.
Smashed Avocado Toast

There are avocado toasts, and then there is Carrotsticks & Cravings’ Smashed Avo on Sourdough ($18 onwards). Sure you could end up spending up to $26 if you opt for add-ons such as smoked salmon, leg ham and pomegranate seeds. However, they use only top quality bread, perfectly seasoned ripe avocados, poached eggs, ultra-decadent smashes of tart feta cheese and generous lashings of dukkah spice and nuts. A squeeze of lime makes it all the better. It’s also a generous portion that can easily be shared.

Inspired by the popular hawker centre thirst quencher, the avocado milkshake, Pine Garden’s cake version is the Avocado Gula Melaka MilkSh-Cake. Here, palm sugar sponge is layered with rich avocado and cream. Pine Garden is an old-school bakery that has been peddling local flavour combinations for their baked goods for decades, and this one is a hit too like all of their others. Priced at $33.50 for half kg (onwards).

The good folks at The Daily Scoop are no novices when it comes to whipping up novel ice-cream flavours. They’ve found a winning combination as the rich and luscious fruit is an excellent add-on into ice-cream. Their Utterly Avocado ($12.50 a pint) uses real avocado puree and is sweetened with delicious gula melaka. Flavours are often rotated so check in before you make a trip.

Most sushi spots offer a typical seaweed wrapped maki roll that comes with a simple avocado filling, and while those are good, we point you in the direction of The Sushi Bar that has interesting makimono that incorporates avocado with various forms of seafood, such as tuna and salmon. Avocado features in the Dragon Roll ($22.90) too, where breaded and fried tiger prawns are topped with grilled unagi, slices of avocado and dollops of tobiko. Exclusive to their Tampines outlet, the Spider Roll ($19.90) is one of soft shell crab wrapped in vinegared rice and topped with avocado and mentaiko. All of the above feature deftly sliced avocado slices, and the combinations work together perfectly.

Mexican restaurants may be a-dime-a-dozen, and guacamole may be served everywhere and on everything from tacos and quesadillas, to hipster protein bowls and superfood salads. For one of the best bowls of guac in town though, we like this stalwart Mexican restaurant in vibrant Haji Lane that has been around for years. At Piedra Negra, the Guacamole ($10.90) is freshly prepared table-side (as it should). Fresh avocado, tomatoes, coriander, onion and serrano chilis are pounded in a mortar and pestle, dressed with lime and served with tortilla chips. It’s simple and excellent.

Pairing avocado with raw fish (salmon, tuna) is a winning combination and the flavours work well in the poke bowls made by A Poke Theory. The Hawaiian-style raw bowls that include avocado are the Avocado Miso Salmon where salmon cubes are doused in an umami-rich avocado miso sauce. You can customise your bowl with toppings and a base of either flavoured sushi rice, brown rice, quinoa or carb-free romaine lettuce. For those who prefer a vegan, all-avocado option, try the Avocado Poke where diced avocado and tomato chunks are steeped in their original shoyu marinade but for a buttery mouthfeel, with citrus flavours from the marinade. Available at juice stalls in most hawker centres and food courts, the humble avocado milkshake is an almost a meal in itself. Places that make it well, use generous chunks of ripe avocado and add evaporated milk and gula melaka as these are complementary flavours. The right consistency is key — not too thick, nor too watery. Alexandra Village Food Centre’s Mr Avocado Exotic Fruit Juice gets it right each and every time. Prices begin at a humble $3 per serve.

A whole cafe dedicated to all things avocado? That’s exactly what Avorush is. For those working in the CBD, this Asia Square restaurant is a go-to spot for all things healthy and delicious. They serve simple avocado toasts on good quality sourdough bread, where the avo is either sliced or smashed, and paired with things such as poached eggs, paprika shrimp and Moroccan salmon. Similarly, there are Avo Bowls where bases such as quinoa and bulgur can be paired with a choice of protein, a variety of cooked or raw veg (such as paprika corn, rosemary carrots and more), and topped with a dollop of their signature guacamole. Prices begin at $5.50 for toasts and $10 for bowls.
Bagels and Avocado

Schmear is definitely one of the best places in town for an authentic NY-style bagel as bagels are baked fresh, in-house daily. They also make good use of avocados in their bagel toppings. The chipotle avocado is one of our favourite schmears – it is simply cream cheese flavoured with smashed avocado and chipotle peppers. The flavours are creamy and piquant all at the same time. You could also opt for a Pizza Bagel where a tomato sauce and cheese topped bagel can have additional toppings such as avocado, chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and more. Prices begin at $6 for a bagel and schmear.

One bite of this sandwich, and all you can think is ‘so simple, so good’. At Free The Robot, thick and pillowy white sandwich bread, slices of avocado, baby spinach leaves, generous spreads of pesto and two kinds of cheese (cheddar and feta) are grilled together to create a buttery, gorgeous toastie sandwich. You can top-up to add smoked salmon, sous-vide chicken breast or beef tenderloin to the mix. The chicken works best in our opinion, and we love how every ingredient is generous, yet holds together perfectly. The Avocado Toastie is priced at $12 onwards.

You have seen avocados getting blended into milkshakes and smoothies, but at Stranger’s Reunion it gets served as a smoothie bowl — complete with superfood toppings, artfully arranged and ready to be snapped from the ‘gram. The avocado smoothie is the base, and the toppings are almond croquants (crunchy cookies), pepitas (pumpkin seeds), bananas, coconut flakes, honey granola coconut-milk chia pudding. It’s big on texture and has wonderful tropical and healthy flavours. Priced at $11.90 for the bowl.
