You may already consume protein in your daily diet, but these grab-and-go protein drinks can be loads more convenient, especially if you work out often.
During exercise our muscles become stressed and small amounts of damage occur to the fibres that make up the muscle. That is why we get sore and achy the next day. Getting in enough protein helps the body recover faster so that you can keep up with your training frequency, quality and duration.
Don’t miss the anabolic golden window, a short period of time of about 30 to 45 minutes after workout during which our bodies best use amino acids for muscle protein synthesis. Here, protein drinks are beneficial because of its convenience. (Who has the time to go home and whip up a meal right after a workout?) Plus, they are tasty to boot and contain 20 to 30g of protein in one serving – an amount that’s difficult to match in one regular meal, especially for vegans and vegetarians.
Here, we round up five grab-and-go protein drinks to guzzle after your next workout.
Meiji High Protein Milk ($3.75, selected Fairprice supermarkets)
The convenient, ready-to-drink Meiji’s High Protein Milk comes in two flavours – Chocolate and Classic Vanilla – both of which taste like or even better than some ‘normal’ milk. Each bottle contains 25g protein.
The chocolate version, which contains whey protein concentrate, comes in an intense chocolate flavour while the vanilla one offers 500mg of L-Carnitine, an amino acid essential for the synthesis of protein in our body. Both versions are great for curbing hunger pangs in between meals or as a tasty bedtime drink, with or without that cookie.
Muscle Milk ($6 to $12, GNC and Guardian)
Despite its higher price point at $6 to $12 depending on the flavour and series (pro or not), Muscle Milk is one of the more established protein brands in Singapore, and for good reason. It contains a blend of high quality proteins, low-sugar carbohydrates, functional fats and a mix of other essential vitamins and minerals.
Each bottle is gluten free and contains about 20 to 40 grams of protein in a smooth and rich concoction that is easy to drink. The taste of Muscle Milk drinks is a clear plus point over the other brands. What’s more, they have several flavours including cafe latte, cookies and creme, banana and vanilla to help break the monotony of drinking the same chocolate shake all the time.

Those allergic to soy or gluten or who are sensitive to GMO products would find it an invaluable fuss-free drink, which has their dietary needs addressed in one package. It comes in two flavours: Creamy Chocolate Fudge and Sweet Vanilla Bean.
Prowater ($58.57 for a 12-pack, Drinkprowater.com)
Not only is Prowater one of the rare non-milk options that is high protein and low in calories, it is made from whey protein isolate which has no lactose and hence will not cause any digestion issues for the lactose-intolerant. It also boosts 25 grams of protein at 105 calories, with less than 1 gram of fat and zero sugar – perfect for those trying to get lean.
The drink is easy to stomach even after a meal, enabling you to hit your protein count without much fuss. It comes in three flavours, best enjoyed when chilled: Kiwi & Strawberry, Orange & Citrus as well as Pineapple Coconut.
Oh Yeah! Ready-to-drink Nutritional Shakes ($6, Fitness Grocer)
Made with fresh twice-filtered milk, which contains a high concentration of protein with little fat and lactose, Oh Yeah! shakes are suitable for the lactose-intolerant contrary to the ‘milkshake’ or ‘creme’ label on the packaging.
Despite having a milkshake-like texture, it only contains 3g of sugar while offering 32g of protein.
