Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death around the world, with the top offenders being heart disease and stroke. A diet rich in cholesterol is one of the prime causes for such diseases. For too long, we have believed that excessive egg consumption is a contributing factor to heart diseases due to their high cholesterol content.
Now, new research is in favour of this innocent breakfast staple. Turns out, people who consume an egg every day can significantly reduce their risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Professor Liming Li and Dr Canqing Yu from Peking University’s School of Public Health in China led a team of researchers from the United Kingdom and China to examine the association between egg consumption and cardiovascular disease. The results of their study was published in the journal, Heart.
For the study, they used data from the China Kadoorie Biobank, an ongoing study that surveys close to half a million adults aged 30 to 79 in China. The participants were asked to record how frequently they consumed eggs.
13.1% of the participants consumed five eggs a week, which made them daily consumers of eggs. 9.1% of them only had two eggs per week, and were categorised as people who rarely consumed eggs. After this, their lifespan was closely followed to monitor their mortality rates.
In the 8.9 years that this group was followed, there were about 83,977 cases of cardiovascular disease, 9,985 of which resulted in death.
Upon analysing the results, they found that daily egg consumption was associated with a lower susceptibility to any form of cardiovascular disease. Regular egg consumers also have a 26% lower chance of getting a stroke and an 18% lowered risk of death caused by cardiovascular disease.
