She takes this powerful herbs-and-spices concoction to treat a fuzzy throat – and has not been ill for the last two years.
Yeap Cheng Guat, the founder and director of homegrown bakery and cafe chain Cedele, has not had the flu in more than two years – quite a feat for many of us.
At a recent chat over Cedele’s newly launched dishes (including one with the latest antioxidant superstar Jasberry rice), Cheng talked about the diet habits she practises to stay in the pink of health, including a tried-and-tested remedy to stave off sore throats and coughs (see point 4 below).
1. Adopt a whole food, plant-based diet
“I eat a plant-based, vegan diet consisting of whole foods at least four days a week. I also try to incorporate G-BOMBS – as coined by American doctor Joel Fuhrman – into my diet daily. G-BOMBS stands for greens (at least two cups), beans, onion, mushroom, berries and seeds. These are foods with the most scientific evidence to reduce cancer risk.
I also love nutritionally dense foods such as nuts and avocado. On days when I’m not following a vegan diet, I eat mostly baked or steamed fish in moderation.”
2. Start the day with nourishing food
“I take steel-cut oatmeal or rolled oats with seeds, blueberries and cinnamon five times a week. It’s a very heart-friendly porridge.”
3. Take immunity-boosting drinks
“I have 500ml of lemongrass and green apple tea, and 250ml of turmeric, black pepper and fenugreek tea every day for a boost in antioxidants, cleansing and detoxifying.”
To make the lemongrass and green apple tea, boil 4 stalks of bruised lemongrass and 1 peeled green apple in 800ml water for 40 minutes.
4. Have a potent tea recipe for under-the-weather days
“I brew this tea for detoxification and anti-inflammatory benefits at least once a month and whenever I’m about to come down with a sore throat or cough: cinnamon, turmeric, ginger and cardamom (optional) in equal portions, with a pinch of black pepper.”
5. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks
“I stay away from sodas and alcohol. My favourite pick-me-up drink is a whole fruit berry or green veggie smoothie sweetened lightly with a whole date.”
