Bobii Frutii serves healthier bubble teas that have no artificial flavouring, colouring and sweeteners.
It’s a fact that bubble tea is filled with lots of sugar, artificial flavouring (and sometimes colouring), and more sugar from add-on toppings. But now, a new bubble tea brand in Singapore is about to change this perception.
Bobii Frutii – which has four outlets in Taiwan and China – has just opened its first store in Singapore’s Clementi Mall, serving drinks that contain no preservatives, additives, artificial colouring and sweeteners.
In case you didn’t know, high-fructose corn syrup that’s found in most sugary drinks is one of the worst kind of sweeteners. A study by the American College of Cardiology showed that excessive consumption of high-fructose corn syrup leads to weight gain.
At Bobii Frutii, healthier brown sugar is used in place of high-fructose corn syrup. And instead of creamer, fresh milk is used in all their milk teas.
Like most bubble teas, you get to choose your preferred sugar level: 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%. To drink with less guilt, go for 50% sugar level or less. Regrettably, this customisable sugar level doesn’t apply to their signature drinks (more on that below).
Bobii Frutii offers a wide range of drinks from milk teas to cheese teas, so you’re definitely spoilt for choice. If it’s your first time trying, pick their signature layered drinks with quirky names like Don’t Want To Work and Mermaid’s Tears.
Like the drinks, the pearls are made in-house with no artificial colourings. They are called “bobii”, a Taiwanese slang for pearls, and come in three flavours – original, butterfly pea and brown sugar. The pearls have rather soft, and not as chewy as other bubble tea pearls we’ve tried. The good thing is that they won’t get stuck between your teeth.
Don’t be surprised if you see actor-singer Nat Ho serving you drinks at Bobii Frutii. After all, he brought this franchise chain to Singapore, seeing how much we love bubble tea.
As the brand ambassador and creative director, Nat definitely does not lack experience. In 2016, he opened LoveBento, a stall that serves healthy bento boxes in Shaw Towers.
To ensure the authenticity of the tea, Nat underwent rigorous training to learn how to create the drinks, and personally visited a tea plantation in Taiwan to understand the farm-to-cup production process of bubble tea.
During the media launch of Bobii Frutii, Nat showcased his skills by making Uji Snow, one of the brand’s signature drinks. We are definitely impressed.
The big question: How do the drinks taste?
We tried some of their signature drinks, and here’s what we think.
Uji Snow ($6.50)
Our favourite among all, this rich and thick drink will please all matcha lovers. The matcha powder is sourced from Uji, a Japanese city that’s known for quality matcha. The earthiness of the matcha complements the sweet fresh milk, making it a pleasant bittersweet drink. Containing slightly sweet original pearls, each cup is hand-whisked upon order, so you’ll get the satisfaction of seeing your drink being made on the spot.

Mermaid’s Tears ($5.90)
This blue and yellow ice-blended drink topped with butterfly pea pearls was the one we were most curious to try. Apparently, this drink is inspired by The Little Mermaid fairytale; yellow represents the shore while blue signifies the sea. And the butterfly pea pearls? They symbolise the mermaid’s tears when her wish to be human didn’t come true.
The yellow layer is a blend of mango juice, honey and yogurt, reminding us of melted mango ice cream. Deriving its colour from butterfly pea extract, the blue layer had no obvious taste. The thick blend was rather hard to stir, so we ended up tasting individual layers of the drink during the first few mouthfuls.
Verdict: This fruit slushie is worth a try, but don’t expect it to taste as exquisite as it looks.
Extraordinary Bubble Milk Tea ($4.50)
Black tea layered with fresh milk, this drink is a more fragrant version of your usual bubble milk tea. The black tea is made from tea leaves imported from Taiwan. The drink has a smooth, pleasant texture, and the brown sugar pearls add a light toffee aroma. Before we knew it, we had finished the entire cup.
