Research If you’re running overseas, find out as much as you can about the weather, route and terrain. Besides logging on to the event website, I trawl forums as part of my race prep. Fellow runners often share useful tips about specific races.

Tips for the marathon rookie: If you’re worried about overcoming race obstacles…
Dehydration I carry water bottles with me, so I can drink up when I need to instead of waiting for water points, which can get very crowded.
Muscle cramps When they come on, I slow down or walk. I also fuel up with power gels or bananas.
Hot weather I distract myself with self-talk. Enjoying the scenery also helps.
