Squeeze in these easy stretches before you go to work every morning to improve your flexibility and mood almost immediately.
Imagine kickstarting your busy day with stiff and tight muscles. This is most often the case when we head to work without preparing our muscles for the day ahead. Spending your day around the workplace with stiff joints hinders your range of movement, making you feel lethargic. This study reveals that tightness in muscles limits one’s range of motions, which may cause an imbalance in muscle usage throughout the day.
Give energy levels, and mood, a boost by squeezing in these few simple stretches every morning. They will loosen up muscles and improve flexibility, among many other benefits.
1. Neck stretch
Hold a neck stretch by looking upwards, downwards, and on either side of shoulders for 20 seconds each.
What it does: It loosens up and prepares neck muscles before spending long hours in front of a screen.
2. Upper back stretch
Interlace hands behind lower back and pull away while simultaneously looking upwards and taking a deep breath.
What it does: It opens up your chest, making it less stiff, something you will appreciate as you spend the rest of the day on your office chair.
3. Lower back twist
Sit cross-legged on the floor and place right hand on left knee. Place left hand behind back and twist to the left. Feel the stretch in your lower back. Hold for 20 seconds. Repeat on the other side.
What it does: It loosens up knots in the lower back that limit your range of movement, making it easier for you go about your day.
4. Hip opener
On the ground, straighten and spread legs wide apart. Slowly lean forward, keeping back straight. Feel the stretch in your inner thighs. Hold for 30 seconds.
What it does: It opens up hips muscles, allowing a wider range of movement as you walk.
5. Side stretch
Stand straight and place left hand on left hip. Reach right hand above head, stretching to the left. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side.
What it does: It elongates the side of your body and warms up muscles, improving flexibility.
