Get that sculpted dancer’s bod with barre classes that we’re all hooked on.
For the uninitiated, barre (pronounced ‘bar’), is a ballet-inspired workout that blends traditional ballet moves like plies with pilates matwork and yoga stretches into a heart-pumping routine. It involves isometric strength training done with a high repetition count and small range-of-motion movements to target smaller muscle groups in your arms, legs, glutes and core. This allows you to strengthen and lengthen your muscles without the added bulk for that long and lean physique.
No choreographed routines are involved, just plenty of pulsing, control and endurance training. Besides using the barre for balance, an assortment of props including gliders, resistance bands, 0.5-1kg dumbbells, mini exercise balls and yoga straps are often used for added resistance.
After gaining traction in the US some eight years ago, barre finally made its way to Singapore in 2012 via boutique fitness studio Upside Motion. And as more barre studios sprouted up here, so did the variety of classes.
When you’ve mastered fundamentals-based classes, you can also choose to shake up your weekly exercise routine with slower barre classes that focus on stretching or pick up the pace with one that includes HIIT.
