Who says you must have a gym membership to work out? Here are some great options for you to sweat it out for free in Singapore.
Hang out at the Singapore Sports Hub
There’s a free class happening every day in the mornings and evenings. Schedules and class types change every month and you can find all kinds of workouts: from Zumba and boot camp, to yoga, kickboxing, community runs, and more. Check out the schedule and registration details for FIT sessions here.
These groups are often formed by passionate individuals who are looking for like-minded folks to work out with, or who want to provide an accessible platform for anyone and everyone to stay healthy.
Check out Free Bootcamp Training @ Botanic Gardens, which happens every Sunday at 9am and Wednesday at 6.30pm. Their workout is inspired by Freeletics, a format created in the U.S combining running and high-intensity interval training for a hardcore fat-burning and muscle-building sweat sesh. Intimidated? Don’t worry – participants are from all walks of life (including couch potatoes!) and the organisers will adjust the training intensity according to your needs.
If you want to play sports, then hit up the folks at Singapore Sports & Recreation Meetup, who run free volleyball, softball or frisbee sessions monthly.
Get in on Sunrise In The City
Sunrise In The City is an initiative between the Health Promotion Board and studio gyms to offer free exercise classes in and near business hubs. Locations are in the Central Business District, The Metropolis, Changi Business Hub, Harbourfront Centre, Westgate Mall, Toa Payoh Central, and more.
Participating companies include Platinum Yoga, True Fitness, One Wellness, Real Yoga, and others. You can choose between yoga, Body Combat, pilates, Kpop dance classes, high-intensity interval training… and the list goes on. Find the schedule and registration here – get clicking, because as you can expect, classes fill up real quick!
Participate in Fitness At Work
Not a morning person? Lunch break too short? Then check out the free evening classes also organised between the Health Promotion Board and fitness studios. Locations are at UOB Plaza, Capitol Piazza, Tanjong Pagar Centre, Sports Hub, Sentosa Boardwalk, Marina Square and The Lawn @ Marina Bay. Find the schedule and registration here – again, fastest fingers win!
Shop until you drop… some squats in the mall
Heartlanders rejoice – you don’t have to enter the city bustle to exercise for free. The Health Promotion Board people have you covered as well with mall aerobic workout sessions. Simply rock up in your activewear and get ready to sweat. No registration required. Check out the schedule here.
Using technology to your advantage
There is no shortage of full-length exercise sessions on Youtube and free workout apps.
A popular free app is Sworkit (available on iTunes and Google Play Store). It’s simple to use and totally customisable, whether you’re a fitness buff or an exercise noob. Choose your workout type (strength, cardio, yoga or stretching), the duration of the workout, and then just follow what’s on the screen! It functions offline so you can exercise anywhere and displays a video of the movement so you know exactly what to do.
On Youtube, look up the Popsugar channel, with tons of full-length videos for dance, cardio, toning and high-intensity circuit workouts.
