If you’re results oriented, strapping on an activity tracker will motivate you to get those workouts in, as many of these trackers allow you to set weekly exercise goals. At the very least, you will be more conscious of clocking in the recommended 10,000 steps a day. To make this number of steps more achieveable, set reminders to ensure you get up and walk around every hour or so – that still counts as exercise.

There’s nothing quite like peer pressure to motivate you to exercise. But seriously, research has shown that those who train in a group work 60 to 90 per cent harder than those who do so alone. So, how do you ensure you turn up for class? I’ve found that signing up for classes with a strict cancellation policy of six hours or less works wonders. And I don’t cancel my spot unless I’m ill or an emergency crops up.

Follow fitness influencers you admire and check out their IG accounts when you need motivation to get off the couch. I like US-based yoga teacher Kino MacGregor (@kinoyoga) and Hong Kong-based yoga enthusiast Lindsay Jang (@lindsayjang), amongst others. Both of them are crazy fit, but also inspiring in other ways – Kino shares heartfelt quotes while Lindsay juggles fitness, family and running restaurants.

Retail therapy isn’t great for your credit card, but it can help in the motivation department. US research has shown that the clothing you wear can positively affect your performance for tasks that you associate that particular type of clothing with. So if you’re decked out from head to toe in activewear you like, you’re more likely to feel driven to do your exercise moves more effectively.

A recent study published in the journal PLOS One showed that a 10-minute workout can yield the same results as a moderate 45-minute sweat sesh. But, within the 10 minutes, you must go all out for one minute. Getting in a 10-minute workout sounds achievable. You can even do it in the comfort of your home – do a variety of exercises to engage your entire body, from core work to mountain climbers to squats (remember to throw in a minute of high-intensity training). Before you know it, you’ll be done and you can watch Orange Is The New Black on Netflix.
