Learn on the go

Whether you dread the monotony of the gym or you have been cooped up in the office, make use of your holiday to push off your butt. Many destinations offer beginner courses on activities you have not thought of trying back home, such as mountainbiking, kayaking, yoga and muay thai. Furthermore, some of these destinations are the birthplaces or are renowned for these activities, so you can’t get a more authentic learning experience else where. Above all, you’ll get closer to the heart of a foreign land – more than you would otherwise.

> Surfing in Australia
Where: Learn to ride the waves at the Bondi Surf School at Bondi Beach in Sydney. You will learn about surf awareness and safety, surf fitness (how to warm up and stretch), standing up and timing, paddling techniques, catching waves, wave selection, turning and advice on how to select equipment. You don’t have to be a champion swimmer to sign up; beginners are taken out only at low tide where the water is knee-deep. If you are up for female camaraderie, there’s a Bondi Surfer Girl weekly beginner session for women only. Groups are kept to a maximum of six each so you get more attention; private lessons are also available. If you’re in Sydney for a week, sign up for the course of three or five lessons. All the instructors are certified by Surfing Australia, Surf Life Saving Australia or the Australian Sports Commission. Upon “graduation”, you’ll receive a Level One certificate issued by Surfing Australia that is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission.

Details: Group sessions start from AUD$79 for a two-hour session at low season; private lessons go for AUD$130 for an hour and AUD$160 for one-and-a-half hours. Find out more at www.letsgosurfing.com.au.
