It’s the moment fans of augmented reality game Pokemon Go have been feverishly waiting for since last year: Pokemon Go Generation 2 monsters are finally (finally!) here. In the latest update by Niantic, you can expect to catch new pokemon like Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. More than 80 pokemon originally discovered in the Johto region in the Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver video games will also be released.

Other updates to look forward to include gender-specific variations of pokemon, new avatars and wardrobes (hooray, trainers don’t all need to look the same now) and new items. As part of the expansion, trainers will be able to spin Pokestops to get two new types of berries – nanab berries and pinap berries. Giving a pokemon a nanab berry will slow its movements, making it easier to catch. The pinap berry doubles the amount of candy you’ll receive if your next catch attempt succeeds.

Another new feature that will be rolled out is new evolutions, where your existing first generation pokemon will be able to evolve into new monsters. For example, Onix can now evolve into Steelix and Chansey can now evolve into Blissey. Additional existing pokemon can now also have multiple evolution paths – Slowpoke can evolve into Slowking, and Eevee can evolve into Espeon and Umbreon etc.

Considering how more than 80 per cent of previous Pokemon Go fans I know have stopped playing, this is definitely a much-needed refresher to the game. At the very least, it gives you more incentive to get out there and clock more steps to fill up your Pokedex. If you don’t have any exercise plans this week, why not just grab a few friends, lace up your sports shoes and hit the road? After all, walking is great for weight loss, plus you can even turn your pokemon hunting into a full-fledged workout with these tips.
