Read this before stocking up on your favourite kimchi instant ramen. By Janice Sim
They might taste delicious at a tiny price to pay, and on top of that take only about five minutes to serve up, but when it comes to instant ramen noodles, it’s always best to follow the ‘once in a blue moon’ eating rule or not at all. Here’s why:
1. Instant noodles are devoid of any healthy nutrients
They’re high in carbohydrates and fat, but low in protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals – essentially lacking in all the healthy, good nutrients you would want to have in a meal.
2. Regular instant noodle consumption can be linked to heart risk
According to a study in Harvard School of Public Health, researchers found that women who consumed instant noodles more frequently compared to those who didn’t, were more likely to have metabolic syndrome – a sum of conditions including increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, high cholesterol, that when occurred together, could increase the risk factor for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The study discovered that women, but not men, who ate instant noodles at least twice a week showed a 68 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome.
3. Seasoning packages aside, the noodles alone are the major problem
If you thought the problem came from the seasoning packages, and that by cutting down on how much you add to your noodles can somehow make it healthier, you thought wrong. The main perpetrator is in fact, the noodles. In a study conducted by Dr. Braden Kuo, director of the gastrointestinal motility laboratory at Harvard University, he found that it is difficult for our body to break down the instant ramen noodles, in our stomachs. Since the noodles are chocked full of preservatives for it to be pre-packaged, it extends the shelf life of fatty foods and make them harder to digest. That truly is a horrifying picture to imagine indeed.
