Statistics show that up to 70 per cent of runners sustain a leg injury that puts them temporarily out of action, says Dr Ben Tan, sports physician and author of Run For Your Life: A Complete Marathon Guide. And nearly half of all running injuries occur at the knee, he adds. A local study also found that those who clock up more than 10km per week are twice as likely to suffer from lower limb injuries as those who pound the pavement less.
“Pain or discomfort is a warning that something is amiss, so runners should learn to listen to their bodies and heed the signs,” advises Dr Tan.
