Veg up to prevent lung cancer
Eating your greens can help protect your lungs from cancer, say researchers from the National Cancer Institute in the US. The study quizzed 2,120 people without lung cancer and 201 people with lung cancer on their eating habits over the past year. Results showed that participants who ate quercetin-rich foods – apples, grapes, onions, broccoli – were 51 per cent less likely to develop lung cancer. Those who ate five or more servings of isothiocyanates-rich food, found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and turnips, were 61 per cent less likely to develop the disease. Overall, eating fruits and vegetables five times or more a week can cut your risk by 42 per cent.
